Over $300 Million In Grant Funds Available for Behavioral Health and Substance Use Disorder Providers

Over $300 Million In Grant Funds Available for Behavioral Health and Substance Use Disorder Providers

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) is making available grant funding opportunities for community-based behavioral health not-for-profits seeking to form Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHC) and to current CCBHCs looking to enhance or expand their services.  156 awards of up to $1,000,000 are expected to be awarded under each grant.

CCBHCs provide comprehensive, coordinated behavioral health care and must meet certification criteria in order to participate.  CCBHCs are required to provide certain services directly such as: crisis mental health services, outpatient mental health/substance use disorder services, and screenings, assessments and diagnosis.  Other services may be provided directly by the CCBHC or through contracts with designated collaboration organizations.

Two grants are available for proposed or existing CCBHCs:

  • Grant to create NEW Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics.
Community-based behavioral health not-for-profits are eligible to apply for a grant to assist the applicant to plan for, develop and implement a new CCBHC. The applicant would be expected to come into compliance with the CCBHC certification criteria within one year of participating in the CCBHC program.  Funds available under this grant are to be primarily used to support direct services.
  • Grant for EXISTING Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics.

Existing CCBHC Medicaid Demonstration Program sites, CCBHC-Expansion grant recipients, or an organization that has been certified by a state as a CCBHC are eligible to apply for a grant to enhance and improve current CCBHCs and to improve access to community-based mental health and substance use disorder treatment and support.  SAMHSA expects that applicants for this grant will include a focus on groups facing health disparities as identified in the applicant’s community needs assessment.

The grant opportunities are available at the following links:

Applications are due for both grants on May 17, 2022.
