New Jersey Medicaid Will Now Reimburse for Services Billed by Social Workers, Counselors

On January 8, 2024, New Jersey passed a law that permits Clinical Social Workers, Professional Counselors, and Marriage and Family Therapists to bill NJ Medicaid/NJ FamilyCare directly for services rendered to Medicaid beneficiaries. Such providers will be able to enroll in Medicaid as an independent provider type and bill for services that are rendered in private practice. Currently, such providers can only bill Medicaid for their services when they are provided within an independent clinic, home care agency, or outpatient hospital.

New Jersey Medicaid is working on the programming build and expects to be able to accept claims starting in July of 2024. Medicaid will issue a Newsletter to providers with instructions for independent billing later this year.
